Geocaching - Hide & Find Activity

A fun and active outdoor, hiking activity where you'll use GPS coordinates to hide some geocaches!

You can also run this as a Group Activity - Take turns with someone hiding geocaches then the others find them!

Activity Details
Instructions
  • Go for a local hike, bringing your geocache(s) with you to hide.
  • Once you find the perfect spot, hide your geocache. You'll want it out of sight of "muggles" (passers-by who might see the geocache and take it with them, not knowing it was left intentionally).
  • Use your GPS device to record the coordinates of the geocache(s) you hid. Upload the coordinates into geocaching.com for others to find, or simply write them on a sheet of paper if you are playing amongst friends only.
  • From a starting area, use your GPS device to follow the coordinates & hints to find the Geocache!
  • If playing amongst friends, exchange coordinates, and go find the other group's geocache. Depending on your schedule constraints, you might hide the geocache one day, and go find the other group's geocache on a separate day.
Equipment
  • Smartphone with Geocache Application downloaded (recommended) -or- GPS Device.
  • Regardless of your GPS device have a phone or radio to call for help.
  • Good walking/hiking shoes
  • Water
  • Sunscreen
  • Pen (for signing cache logs)

Parent Prep: Choose your GPS device: either an app downloaded to your smartphone or purchase a designated GPS device. GPS devices often have stronger antenna to receive a signal in places where cell phones might not, but there are usually plenty of urban geocaches which can be found using a cellphone.
